What is sheltered air storage?
Sheltered air storage is an essential step in maintaining the quality of hardwood after it has been sawn. The aim is to keep the wood away from the elements, while allowing air to circulate naturally to guarantee a gradual stability of the humidity level. This phase often precedes artificial drying or the direct use of wood for processing.
The advantages of controlled storage
- Preservation of wood quality : protected from rain, frost and direct sun, wood maintains its robustness and its natural appearance.
- Defect reduction : ventilated storage limits sudden changes in humidity, thus reducing the risk of cracks and deformations.
- Increased stability : wood is better prepared for the following stages of processing, whether it is carpentry, cabinetry or wood construction.
Storage on the park and in the shed: two complementary approaches
- On the park : the wood is stored outside, with natural ventilation ensuring slow and homogeneous drying while maintaining the strength of the material.
- Under hangar : wood is stored away from the weather in closed structures, for reinforced protection and better control of humidity levels, especially for more sensitive species.
