At Scierie Vuitton, wood quality depends on more than just the sawing process. From the moment they arrive at our log yard, logs are carefully monitored to ensure their quality is preserved right up until they are processed.

One of the most critical steps is log sprinkling. This practice, common in sawmills specializing in high-quality hardwoods, helps maintain the wood's properties while minimizing material loss.

Why sprinkle logs?

Even after felling, wood remains a living material. When exposed to heat and wind, it gradually loses its moisture.

If this drying process happens too quickly, several defects can occur:

  • end checks or cracks at the log ends,
  • deformations caused by a sudden loss of moisture,
  • increased susceptibility to certain wood-boring insects,
  • degradation of the wood quality prior to sawing.

Sprinkling maintains constant moisture levels and slows the log's natural drying process, thereby preserving its full potential for processing.

An essential practice during hot weather

Sprinkling is primarily carried out in the spring and especially during the summer, when temperatures rise and dry spells become more frequent.

These periods are particularly critical for hardwood species like oak, beech, or ash, whose log ends are sensitive to checking caused by rapid evaporation.

Maintaining a high moisture content ensures that the raw material remains high-quality until it is sawn.

Preserving the value of every log

Each log represents decades of forest growth. Its quality must be protected until it enters production.

By limiting cracks and natural degradation, sprinkling directly contributes to improving material yield and reducing waste during the sawing process.

This step also ensures that we provide our customers with wood that meets the quality standards required for applications such as joinery, carpentry, interior design, and cabinetmaking.

A responsible sprinkling system

At Scierie Vuitton, log sprinkling is an integral part of our environmental commitment.

Our facility operates using a closed-loop system : the water used is continuously collected, filtered, and then reused to supply the irrigation system again.

The network is primarily supplied by rainwater harvesting, stored in a dedicated basin. This natural resource helps limit the use of drinking water while ensuring our facilities operate continuously.

Thanks to this optimized management, water circulates constantly without being wasted, significantly reducing our resource consumption.

A CSR approach applied daily

This system is a concrete illustration of Scierie Vuitton's CSR commitments.

Preserving wood quality while optimizing water usage is an integral part of our vision for a more responsible industry.

By combining rainwater harvesting, continuous water recycling, and maximizing the value of our raw materials, we aim to reconcile industrial performance with respect for natural resources.

Preserving today the wood of tomorrow

Log sprinkling is an often overlooked but essential step in the processing of high-quality hardwood.

It protects a precious resource, ensures a high level of quality for our customers, and limits material loss, all while being part of sustainable water management.

At Scierie Vuitton, every log benefits from the best storage conditions before being processed, with respect for the wood, the resource, and the environment.
