On a construction site, wood is often subject to variable conditions: humidity, dust, temperature variations, multiple handling... Poor storage can quickly degrade the quality of the material and compromise the success of the project. Here are the most common mistakes to avoid in order to preserve your wood until it is implemented.

1. Place the wood on the floor

❌ Problem:

Direct contact with the ground favors the absorption of moisture and the development of molds.

✅ Good reflex:

Always place wood on wedges, bastaings or pallets to ensure ventilation from below.

2. Do not protect wood from the weather

❌ Problem:

Rain, snow or direct sun can alter the wood: swelling, splitting, discoloration...

✅ Good reflex:

Cover the woods with a tarp breathable (and not airtight), or better still, store them Under cover.

3. Stack without regular wedges

❌ Problem:

Improperly positioned stacks can lead to deformations, twists, or poor ventilation.

✅ Good reflex:

Wedge regularly (every 40 to 60 cm), with battens aligned vertically between each layer.

4. Leaving the extremities unprotected

❌ Problem:

The ends of the wood dry out more quickly, causing cracks and splits.

✅ Good reflex:

Use wood that has been waxed at the end, or apply a specific wax as soon as you receive it if necessary.

5. Change the storage location without acclimatization

❌ Problem:

Going from a cold exterior to a heated interior without transition can make wood work brutally.

✅ Good reflex:

Let the wood acclimatize 24 to 72 hours in the installation site before any machining.

6. Forget to identify the plots or lots

❌ Problem:

It is then impossible to know the species, thickness or humidity level of mixed or unlabeled wood.

✅ Good reflex:

Keep the labels, organize by type and section, and avoid mixing different studs.
