Receiving and storing your wood properly is a step that is often underestimated, but crucial to ensure the quality of the material before it is used. Poor handling or inadequate storage can cause deformations, moisture regain or even irreversible damage. Here are all the essential tips for properly receiving and maintaining your wood in the best conditions.

1. Anticipating the arrival of wood

Even before delivery, make sure your workshop or warehouse is ready to receive the wood:

  • Storage space clean, dry and ventilated
  • Flat ground and insulated from humidity
  • Availability of dry wedges or bastaings To raise the pedestals

A good location, away from direct sun and sudden climatic variations, already prevents many problems.

2. Check the condition of the wood at the reception

Upon delivery:

  • Count and inspect The studs or the boards
  • Look for signs of humidity, mold, or shock
  • Read the tags : fuel, thickness, humidity level, origin

In the event of an anomaly, take photos and report it quickly to your supplier.

3. Respect good storage practices

Positioning:

  • Storage Horizontally, on aligned wedges
  • Regular spacing between the battens (every 40 to 60 cm depending on the length)
  • Never place directly on the ground

Protection:

  • Cover the top with a breathable tarpaulin, OSB board or geotextile film
  • Avoid the airtight plastic cover (risk of condensation)
  • Allow air to circulate between layers of wood

4. Adapt according to the type of wood received

  • Hardwood : still evolving, must be stored in a sheltered place, in the open air
  • Artificially dried wood (10-12% humidity): to be stored in stable and dry environment, close to the conditions of end use

Well-dried wood that gains moisture will lose its stability and may warp or split.
